  • Unmaintained landscape with many overgrown plants and weeds.

  • Existing pine and cedar too close/grown together.

  • Leggy spruce too close to driveway obscures entryway.

DESIGN

  • Curvilinear beds from foundation wrapping to driveway, wrapping around number sign.

  • Ornamental tree anchoring corner of house.

  • New paver walk connecting front landing and driveway.

  • Path lights next to walkway and uplights on ornamental tree/ number sign.

  • Upright juniper in bed filling void space on house facade.

CLIENT REQUESTS

  • Low Maintenance.

  • Custom house number sign.

  • Vibrant pink flowers, avoid pale pink.

  • Limestone boulders.

  • Keep existing rose bush.

PROJECT NOTES

  • Client requested additional path lights beyond our recommended amount. Result is an over-lit walkway.

  • Experimented with plant choices, some replacement and design tweaking was needed a year later.

  • Used “Richer Lake” stone ground cover as an alternative to traditional River Wash. This is a much nicer lighter stone ground cover option.

  • Riverheights neighbourhood front and back yard complete renovation.

  • Front yard has grading issues, is not well maintained, and has existing columnar cedar/mockorange.

  • Backyard has an unfinished deck, a heaved diamond-slab walkway, and is not well maintained.

FRONT YARD

  • New planting beds and fix grading.

  • Keep mockorange and columnar cedar.

BACKYARD

  • Re-use existing diamond face concrete slabs.

  • Patio space next to deck for dining.

  • Lounge area across from garage for viewing projected films.

  • Pergolas over existing deck and lounge area.

  • Impermanent access between deck and gate.

  • Screen neighbours view onto deck and into living room window.

DESIGN

FRONT YARD

  • Boulder soil retention utilized to fix grading and create height interest.

  • Pinkish stone in “Gull Lake” ground cover compliments pink house finish.

BACKYARD   

  • Lounge and dining area patios match colours but vary in texture.

  • Step stones connecting deck and gate.

  • Timber pergolas over deck and lounge area.

  • Riverstone and bark mulch bed ground covers for variety of colour/texture.

PROJECT NOTES

  • First full front and back yard design and install.

  • Pergola plan implementation faced challenges, lessons learned about effective carpentry plans.

  • First use of boulder soil retention, successful and will use in the future.

  • Unmaintained planting bed with many bare patches.

  • Increase curb appeal.

  • Screen neighbours garage wall and garbage area.

PROJECT NOTES

  • First time designing and installing a fence.

  • First use of stackstone as an edging material, successful aesthetic, grass creeps through joints.

  • Cedars flanking dogwoods at foundation smaller at time of install, will grow to be larger but imbalanced initially, lesson learned about nursery availability and how it impacts designs.

  • Client was very satisfied.

DESIGN

  • Brown pressure treated fence extended at 4’ height along property line.

  • Stackstone pre-cast concrete bed edging.

  • Step stones for side yard access.

  • Scattered granite fieldstone boulders with assorted shrubs and grasses filling beds.

  • Feature tree anchoring corner of house, further screening neighbours garage.

  • North facing lot across from undeveloped field.

  • Sub-graded lot.

  • Windbreak facing northwest to prevent snow build up near front door.​

  • Black granite ground cover.

  • Hide septic tank access.

DESIGN

  • Island bed with columnar crab apples for wind break and boulder soil retention acting as a snow fence.

  • Black granite ground cover with rip-rap for texture.

  • Large shade tree anchoring corner of house.

  • Various layered perennials, grasses, shrubs, and evergreen shrubs in planting beds.

  • Step stone path through bed for access to backyard.

PROJECT NOTES

  • Tree and boulder combination for snow/wind break confirmed to be successful by client.

  • The solution for septic tank access screening could have been more successful, I will consider other options in the future.

  • Paved pathway connecting deck and shed.

  • Timber landscape tie bed edging.

  • Winter privacy along back property line.

  • Bury/preserve surface roots.

  • Gardening space along house and deck.

  • Native plants.

  • Shade garden side yard.

PROJECT NOTES

  • First use of timbers for raised beds and edging.

  • Request for winter privacy along back property line while preserving surface roots presented a design challenge.

  • Side yard shade garden was particularly successful
