  • Unmaintained landscape with many bare patches and dead plants.

  • Overgrown and crowded existing tree lilac.

  • Scattered existing boulders.

  • Significant elevation change from entryway to street level.

CLIENT REQUESTS

  • Low maintenance.

  • Tall Grasses.

  • Remove all boulders.

  • Contemporary style with a clean look.

PROJECT NOTES

  • Implementation of retaining wall created interest with a contemporary look.

  • Addition of rip-rap to smaller ground cover was successful in creating interesting ground texture, would use again in the future.

DESIGN

  • Linear retaining wall to created height interest and level planting bed near landing.

  • Ornamental tree and shrubs anchor corner of house.

  • Simple hedge adjacent utility area along property line.

  • Black granite rip-rap mixed into 1.5” stone ground cover for texture and erosion control.

  • Horizontal junipers planted at top of slope next to retaining wall for erosion control and cascading effect.

  • River West Park neighbourhood property facing south.

  • Barren unmaintained existing beds.

  • Overgrown evergreens dominating yard.

CLIENT REQUESTS

  • Low maintenance.

  • Remove existing evergreens.

  • Reshape and renovate existing planting beds.

  • Shade entryway from sun.

DESIGN

  • Simple bed layout with shrubs and perennials flanking the driveway, surrounding house and walkway.

  • Pine bark mulch ground cover.

  • Island bed around existing shade tree.

  • Top graft hydrangea in corner rising above regular hydrangea for height interest.

  • Showy mountain ash with maidenhair grass under story to shade and obscure doorway.

PROJECT NOTES

  • Mountain ash and maidenhair grass combination inspired by other landscape, did not achieve intention in this project, design location was not ideal.

  • Foundation hydrangeas and top-graft design idea was relatively successful, may use in the future.

SITE

  • Meadowood neighbourhood backyard.

  • Heaved patio needs replacing.

  • Yard barren due to recently infilled pool.

  • Raised garden bed in corner of yard.

DESIGN

  • Step stones lead from front gate in side yard to patio.

  • Columnar crab apples near patio space for privacy and spring interest.

  • Honeylocust tree planted in raised corner bed for shade/filtered light.

  • Black granite ground cover with rip-rap for texture.
    Scattered black granite boulders.

CLIENT REQUESTS

  • Low maintenance.

  • Replace lawn.

  • Replace Patio

  • Simple beds along yard perimeter.

PROJECT NOTES

  • Created a simple low maintenance yard for client.

  • Rip-rap for texture was once again used, still very pleased with how this looks.

  • Ridgewood West neighbourhood new development.

  • No existing landscape, sub-graded lot.

  • Neighbour landscape is existing, ends abruptly at property line.

CLIENT REQUESTS

  • Low maintenance.

  • Tall Grasses.

  • Pink Flowers.

  • Black granite ground cover.

  • Keep in character with rest of street.

  • Privacy in backyard with primarily lawn area.

DESIGN

  • Front bed layout ties into neighbour landscape seamlessly.

  • Tall grasses and low maintenance shrubs with scattered boulders.

  • Flowering crab apple in line with front door to frame walkway and view from entrance.

  • Backyard privacy achieved with white and pink flowering trees.

PROJECT NOTES

  • First time designing for a new build landscape.

  • Cohesion with neighbours landscaping was successful and appreciated by all parties involved.
